A Nonprofit for Insurance Consumers

Insurance is a promise.
We exist to make sure it gets kept.

The Insurance Foundation of America is a nonprofit that brings insurance consumers and the professionals who serve them together, and gives the insurance industry a path back to trust.

The Problem We Exist to Solve

A trillion dollars a year, for a promise.

Every year, Americans pay over a trillion dollars in premiums for one thing: a promise. The promise that when the accident happens, when the diagnosis comes, when the storm hits, someone will be there.

Too often, the promise is broken. Claims are delayed until people give up. Damage worth fifteen thousand dollars is settled with a three thousand dollar check. Treatments are denied on technicalities. Families are forced to fight the very company they paid to protect them.

Here is the number that tells the whole story. When people appeal a health insurance denial, the majority of those appeals succeed. Yet only about one in nine people ever appeals. The system counts on you giving up.

What We Do

Three programs. One promise kept.

InsuranceAid.com

Our flagship program. A free national resource that teaches consumers their rights, walks them through every state's complaint and appeal process, and connects them with a directory of professionals who fight for policyholders: attorneys, public adjusters, repair shops, patient advocates, and more.

The Fairness Score

The only insurance rating in America that no insurer can buy. We grade insurers on how they behave when they owe you money, using government complaint records, federal denial data, an annual survey of the professionals who deal with these companies daily, and documented consumer experiences. Price tells you what a policy costs. The Fairness Score tells you if it will pay.

The Fair Claims Council

Accountability without hatred. The Council invites insurers, regulators, and consumer advocates to the same table to set voluntary fair claims standards and recognize the companies that meet them. Fury burns things down. We would rather build something better.

About the Council

Why Now

When people lose faith in lawful ways to be heard.

In December 2024, a health insurance executive was murdered in New York, and millions of people cheered online. We do not celebrate that. We grieve it, for his family and for what it revealed. When people cheer a killing, it means they have lost all faith in lawful ways to be heard.

The Insurance Foundation of America is our answer. A lawful, constructive, relentless way to be heard.

Insurance Foundation of America is an Arizona nonprofit corporation. Consumers never pay us anything. Insurance companies never pay us anything. The professionals who serve policyholders fund this mission, alongside donors who believe in it.
